The Engineering Design Process

Many engineers use an organized engineering design process to deliver solutions to customer needs. The process helps to structure projects and promotes creativity. The objective raw data that is collected during the process can to reduce bias and encourage better decision making. In addition the engineering process teaches that failures and setbacks could be useful sources for future data.

The definition of a problem is the first step of the engineering design process. Engineers must know what their product is designed to do and the reason they require it. This is essential for the rest of the engineering process.

After defining the problem It is crucial to gather as much information as is possible about the solution. This can be done by research, asking critical questions and brainstorming ideas. This is where engineering creativity truly shines and where the most innovative solutions be found.

Engineers must identify potential solutions and weigh their pros and cons prior to selecting the most suitable. The solution should also meet the requirements of the project (e.g. materials, cost, time and space).

After the most effective solution is selected, it is an excellent idea to create a prototype of the product or equipment. Then tests can be run to see if the product performs what it’s supposed accomplish. By identifying weaknesses in the initial stages, it reduces overall project development time and can save money when it comes to fixing issues later on.
